PADE Day 4 : Theme Distance

View of Öresund Bridge from a beach in Malmö

A man-made marvel, Oresund bridge – connecting Sweden and Denmark – is a delight to look at from a Distance. This photo represents “Distance” for me because it stands for the marvel of human intelligence.

For more photos and details about the Oresund Bridge read my post Unique.
I took this photo from my Nikon Coolpix L100 in 2010 in Malmo, Sweden.

Done with the Archived photo, let’s deal with something Fresh…

As I shared with in my PADE Day One – Alone post, I spent two days in Jeju, and island in South Korea last week. I was there with my husband and five of our friends, we had a lot of fun. We tried to cover major tourist attraction in our limited time there.

I was quite interested in viewing sunrise from the Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise peak) in Jeju-si, South Korea. We went there early in the morning (5am, expected sunrise time 5.28 am) on our second day.

Near the base of Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju-si

It was cold, windy and foggy; totally opposite of the sunny warm day 1. We decided to climb the steep 182m Tuff cone anyway. It was a difficult climb due to our sore muscles (especially mine from scuba diving and 3 hour beach enjoyment extravanganza on Day 1).

A couple of our friends were about to give up when I asked them to focus on only climbing one set of steps at a time rather than looking at the top of the peak. We were midway at that point and I made them realize that the top was closer than the base and it was easier now to deal with it.

I also felt tired but I focused on conquering my physical limitations. Living with the regret of not climbing up those last few hundred steps and missing out on the beauty of the new seven wonders of nature, also a UNESCO heritage site, was more than I could take. We all climbed up at different speeds but finally made it to the top.

During this trip especially the part of the Seongsan Ilchulbong peak, I could feel Martin Luther King Jr.’s words ring in my ears:

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

Had I let the steep climb overwhelm me, I would not have been able to climb to the top. I just concentrated on climbing a set of stairs (10-15) at a time and look at the beautiful view from each point of the sunrise peak!

I had a similar feeling with PADE. It looked like a huge undertaking when I posted my entry to invite people on Indiforum for PADE. And now I just try to concentrate on posting pictures for the theme of the day. It seems to work for me!

Photography perspective: We took this photo with Nikon D7100 (DSLR) using a tripod since there was too little light that early in the morning and the weather was too cold, we were shivering. The main focus is on the stairs to show “distance” we had to climb up rather than the peak. I edited this photo to just add a bit of light otherwise it was too darn dark.

I have better pictures of the sunrise peak, this one was meant to just show “Distance”. I will share my experience in Jeju in the near future. Stay tuned@

Now that we are done with the PADE photo stuff, let me show you the result of all that hardwork. This is what we were supposed to see:

This is what we actually saw:

jeju, korea, tourist places, island, new 7 wonders, sunrise peak

Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone in Jeju, South Korea

Yep, we are that lucky. We anticipated the clouds and fog to clear up but it didn’t. We made up for the disappointment by clicking hundreds of picks in various poses from the poster of Fast & the Furious 6 to Lincoln park to Hum Tum. It ended up being fun.

And sun did rise that day, we saw it at 4pm!

  1. Ritu awssome, loved each photograph and learning with each one!!!!

  2. Ritu says:

    Thanks Sfurti!

  3. Very unique perspective, and bridges aid in covering distances. Nice click.

  4. Lovely pictures, I always like to hear stories with them :)
And, interestingly I am scheduled for a scuba course next month and the tuff cone equally fascinates me being a Geologist :D

  5. Ritu says:

Thanks. Actually I believe in writing the thousand words my pictures cannot convey!
Tuff cone was a beautiful thing from a distance but disappointing. I actually got a photo taken with a “sad face” pointing to a banner showing aerial view of the peak. It’s hilarious.
