Nami Island also known as Namiseom or Naminara Republic is a half-moon shaped island that emerged on the Northern part of the Han River after the construction of the Cheongpyeong dam. It is located in Chuncheon which is just an hour drive from Seoul.
I went to Nami Island last April and I can still remember how beautiful and peaceful it was. There is so much greenery and so many activities to do, I think it is perfect for a weekend getaway. Very relaxing and very different from the fast paced life in Seoul.
Nami Island is called Naminara Republic because they treat it like a different country. The tickets issued for the entry to the island are like Visa. It is so cute. There are 2 ways to access Namiseom from Chuncheon, take a ferry or Zipline!
There are a few fun water rides, land rides for families and photo points so the day will pass quickly at Nami Island! Nami Island is a family friendly place. The only way to come back from Nami Island is a 10 minute Ferry ride.
I had never gone ziplining before so I insisted we pay 40000 KRW (40$) to start of our trip. Ziplining is expensive but for one time, it was worth the ride and I think we were in the air for about 90 seconds and it was amazing. I will never forget the view from up there!
After reaching Nami Island, we spent our time exploring on a bicycle and then doing some water sports. We chilled out by the river side for some time in the evening before getting some snacks. I was the only vegetarian in the group so I had to be content with potato crisps. Food can be a bit of a problem there but we had carried lunch so it was not a big problem for us (snack time was a tiny hassle).
There are places to spend the night too but those options did not suit our pockets so it was just a day trip for us. If you can spare a little, it will be a great 2 day-1 night trip. The journey from where I stay to Nami Island and back (plus full day of activities) made us feel exhausted. We were sitting like zombies in the train from Chuncheon to Oksu (and then 45 more minutes to home). But it was a great trip. I did not get to go back but if I had explored all of Seoul, Nami Island is one place I would keep going back to every year!
Tips for visiting Nami Island:
- Take note of the opening and closing time of the island and ferry service. For ziplining, book it in advance but if you get it on the spot, you might have to wait for sometime (we waited for 2 hours).
- Make sure you go early in the day, at least before noon, to explore the 3.8 km island before sunset.
- Nami Island looks its best in spring and autumn so plan your trip, if you can, accordingly.
- Wear comfortable shoes (duh?)
- Plan you meals or snacks beforehand. I’d suggest carrying your own food, the options there are limited!
I hope this post is helpful to you if you are planning to visit Nami Island. It is a place to relax in nature and leave the worried behind. It is a great option for a romantic date too 😉
